Nexus International School, Putrajaya

Background

Nexus International School Putrajaya (NISP) is the first international school to be established in Putrajaya. Located in Precinct 15 (the diplomatic enclave in Putrajaya), it is a member of Taylor's Education Group (TEG) and has the backing of a company that is well known for educational excellence for more than 60 years. Nexus has a purpose built campus with spacious grounds and offers a peaceful, but well equipped environment for learning that is only a 30-minute drive from KL Sentral.

World class facilities include expansive sports fields, a 25-metre swimming pool, tennis courts, air conditioned gym, specialist art, music and drama suites, modern science labs, a world class library and a theatre. ICT is fully integrated into the curriculum to facilitate learning at all levels in the school to prepare learners to become global citizens of the 21st century. Younger children use iPads, the primary school has access to laptops in trolleys, and learners from Year 6 - 13 have their own MacBook Pro laptops which are used across the curriculum.

We are an international minded learning community that nurtures and supports every child's emotional, physical, creative and intellectual needs so that they can achieve academic success and become globally responsible citizens. We accomplish this by celebrating diversity and challenging minds.

At NISP, we promise to :

  • Treat everyone as gifted and talented individuals and foster those talents and gifts through careful mentorship and guidance that is based on respect for all.
  • Provide an environment that allows these talents to ?ourish : one that is innovative, progressive and grounded in trust, compassion and respect.

NISP is a member of CIS and is authorised by IBO, CIE and AQA as an examination centre. Although we are a new school, our students have already gained top in the world results in Cambridge IGCSE examinations and distinguished themselves in a variety of competitions, most recently winning both primary and secondary categories at the KL international schools Novel Knockout competition. An active co-curricular programme includes arts and sports events and regular participation in MUN events in KL and overseas.

Uniqueness of School

Established in 2008, the school prides itself on its inclusive learning environment and is the first school in Malaysia to have a specific focus on personalisation of learning. We emphasise the requirement for high quality teaching throughout the school and more than 90% of our teachers are from the UK, Australia or New Zealand. In addition to class and subject teachers, we also have a strong team of specialist teachers who provide academic support for learners with English as a second language and those with learning needs. In addition to supporting children in attaining academic success, we also aim to develop well rounded learners with an emphasis on personal goals at the primary level and personal and social education at the secondary level. Furthermore, we deliver an extensive sports and creative arts curriculum across all years plus offer many extra curricular opportunities including residential trips both in Malaysia and abroad.

Our boarding house is already well known for the quality of the physical surroundings and pastoral care. There are 28 boarders on each floor of the boarding house, with a House Parent living on each floor. High level security arrangements ensure that there is complete safety on site. A range of boarding options are available, including day and weekly, as well as termly boarding. The boarding house is an overseas member of the Australian Boarding Schools Association (ABSA).

Programme Outline and Curriculum

Our early years programme is based on the Reggio Emilia philosophy of learning through play, then from Years 1-6 we follow the International Primary Curriculum (IPC). In secondary school, our Middle Years programme for Years 7 - 9 is based on the UK National Curriculum standards, Year 10 and 11 learners study for International IGCSE qualifications and the IB Diploma Programme is followed in Years 12 and 13.

NISP has chosen IPC to help learners achieve their maximum potential. It is an international, up-to-date, comprehensive and future oriented curriculum aimed at learners growing up in the 21st century. IPC nurtures a love of learning and encourages the necessary key skills and personal qualities. NISP also references the UK National Curriculum English and Maths standards and supplements the IPC learning goals with these to ensure depth of core skills.

The secondary school at Nexus maintains the philosophy developed in the primary years with a strong focus on cross-curricula links and maintaining an inquiry based learning philosophy. However, the learning programme is more specialised and based on subject disciplines to develop greater independence of thought, identity and value systems. This is to provide a solid foundation for the challenges of the International General Certificate of Education and later on, the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. ICT continues to be integrated into all facets of learning at the secondary level.

Our policy sets a maximum class size of 16 in early years, 24 in primary and lower secondary, and 16 at IB diploma level. Currently, most classes are smaller than this with a typical class containing between 15 - 18 students. With a student roll of approximately 600, the overall teacher to student ratio in the school is around 1:8.

Extra-Curricular Activities

There is a full and varied CCA programme offered which will vary according to demand. Activities will normally be held after school from Monday through Thursday for approximately an hour. The range of CCAs may vary each term. Some of the CCAs offered at Nexus International School are as follows :

Entry Requirements and Selection Criteria

All children have to pass an English test. This ensures that their language is sufficiently developed for them to access our curriculum. The test varies according to the age of the child. Children are assessed and interviewed to decide whether they will be happy at NISP. We are not selective on academic ability but we need to ensure that they will be able to cope with the demands of our curriculum and be able to make progress.
