School Profile

International School of Kuala Lumpur

Background

Established in 1965, the International School of Kuala Lumpur (ISKL) is the first fully accredited international school in Malaysia.

Over the years, ISKL has built its outstanding international reputation by balancing sound tradition for academic excellence with innovative approaches to teaching, learning and expanding technology.

ISKL is a private, not for profit, parent-governed school accredited in the United States through the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and internationally through the Council of International Schools (CIS). ISKL has no shareholders. We pay no dividends. Our only business is the education of your children.

Among the programmes offered are Prep Reception (3 years old) to high school diploma, the International Baccalaureate diploma and advanced placement courses. ISKL provides high quality education for expatriate children residing with their families in Kuala Lumpur and academically qualified Malaysian students. More than 1600 students attend ISKL from more than 60 countries. In view of our diverse student population, our programmes have been designed to nurture our students' appreciation of other cultures.

At ISKL, learning does not stop with academics but encompasses social, emotional and moral development. We offer a well-rounded educational programme for our students to excel and lead balanced quality lives outside of the classroom. ISKL students have many opportunities to engage in challenging academic programmes as well as extensive interscholastic athletics and activities. ISKL's faculty comprises highly qualified and experienced professionals, two thirds of whom hold postgraduate degrees. An experienced staff assists the faculty and administration and contributes to the successful daily operation of the school.

Key to the school's success is the active involvement of all members of the school community. The Board of Directors is composed of parents elected by the parent community. Parents also volunteer through the Parent Teacher Association and Booster Club, supporting the wide variety of after-school activities and other special programmes throughout the year.

ISKL is a place where the interaction of students, faculty and families creates an energetic and invigorating learning environment. ISKL is truly the first step to a lifetime of learning. Welcome to ISKL!

What Makes Us Special

Excellence always begins with people. ISKL has an outstanding faculty and staff, talented and motivated students and a supportive and enthusiastic parent body. This combination is a powerful mix that generates excitement for learning on a daily basis. ISKL holds high academic and behavioural standards for its students.

The result is students who are academically and socially well prepared for the next stage of their education, whether that stage is elementary school, middle school, high school or university.

This Vision for Our Students sustains us in all that we say and do. Each day our faculty and staff seek to offer both challenge and care to our students, assisting them to meet their potential as students and active global citizens. We value education for the whole child, fostering the intellectual, emotional, social and physical development of our students.

At ISKL, our two campuses are friendly, vibrant environments in which parents, alumni and guests are always welcome. Fostering a strong sense of community where people are valued for their interests and contributions is very important to us. We offer students and families a broad array of opportunities to become involved in the school. Our co-curricular programme is an expansive one and results in busy campuses six and sometimes seven days a week.

These are stimulating times for ISKL. Despite the global recession, our enrolment has remained strong, reaching over 1,600 total students for each of the past three years. Our students are diverse, with 60+ nationalities represented, and with no one country representing more than 25% of our total student body. Any student attending ISKL will literally have the opportunity to interact with students from around the world each day.

How exciting! for learning. Even as we seek a new campus site on which to accommodate our growing population, we have put much time and energy into enhancing our present campuses. We have also consistently improved the programmes offered to our students. Recent examples include expanded Elementary School Mandarin and Spanish Language programmes, a one-to-one student laptop ratio in Grades 4 - 12, and an expanded high school experiential learning programme (Global Action Program) that sends our older students throughout Asia. Fantastic!

Academic Strength & Teaching-Learning Resources

Student learning is at the heart of what we do at the International School of Kuala Lumpur. ISKL provides its students with learning experiences that challenge each of them to develop the following four aspects of learning : knowledge, skills, attitudes and understanding in order to become highly successful, responsible and contributing members to our interconnected world.

Student knowledge is enhanced through our carefully designed, standards-based curriculum, which sets high expectations of what students should know. Our diverse student body, our effective use of technology, our strong emphasis on knowing about our environment, combined with the exceptional experience of our faculty provide students with access to knowledge that is relevant to their future success.

ISKL provides students with a challenging, yet differentiated and supportive learning environment to develop exceptional skills. These opportunities help students fulfill their potential and develop what is necessary for their future success. The wide range of leadership opportunities both inside and outside the classroom contributes towards building leadership, communication, and collaboration skills.

Learning also focuses on developing attitudes in students that are congruent with ISKL mission and School-wide Learning Results (SLRs). Learning acknowledges and encourages student voices as central to the learning experience. It promotes peer work, collaboration, builds positive relationships and promotes responsibility for their own learning. ISKL's students exhibit healthy attitudes towards themselves, others and the environment.

Our faculty plans and teaches using the Understanding by Design framework, with a strong emphasis on inquiry, creativity and reflection to ensure that students develop deep understandings of their learning. Teachers use a wide-range of strategies to promote active participation and to allow students to develop an understanding of their preferred learning styles. These experiences enable our students to develop a passion for life-long learning. ISKL is truly a community of learners. This is reflected by our supportive student resource services, our commitment towards the professional development opportunities offered locally and internationally, the positive and yet innovative school culture, and the excellent involvement of our parent body.
