Experiential Learning - The Heart of the Beaconhouse School System

The Beaconhouse School System is a 33-year-old International School System which spans over eight countries - the United Kingdom, Oman, U.A.E, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Philippines, Thailand and Malaysia. From pre-schools , private national schools, private international schools to their very own Liberal Arts University, the Beaconhouse Group has been labelled the "Largest Private Institution of its kind in the World" by the World Bank. We now have more than 165,000 students spread over 398 schools across these eight countries. The Beaconhouse Group has therefore been responsible for touching millions of lives in private education over these years. The Beaconhouse School System began in Malaysia five years ago with the opening of its first pre-school in SS19, Subang Jaya, culminating in their acquisition of Sri Inai Primary and Secondary School, Petaling Jaya in 2005. In 2006, the school was renamed Beaconhouse Sri Inai, Petaling Jaya. In just three quick years, Beaconhouse Sri Inai has tripled its numbers in terms of student enrolment - testimony of the success of the International Beaconhouse School System in Malaysia. The educational philosophy of the group, "Rethinking Schools for Today and Tomorrow", is based on the premise that teaching is more than just a dispensation of knowledge, it is in fact about the utilisation of knowledge.

Truly Experiential Learning Philosophy at Beaconhouse Schools

What sets us apart from other education providers is our insistence on experiential learning, be it at the pre-school or at the school level. Our educational philosophy is to change our schools from a 'teaching environment' into a 'learning environment'. This is done via our specialised teaching methodologies which are all designed to enable our students to 'experience' the process of learning rather than 'memorise or accept' the facts presented. Our teachers are consistently trained by accredited trainers from the University College of St.Marks and St.John, an accredited and renowned teacher training University College in the UK. From this tailor-made training programme, our teachers are trained not to become teachers but instead, facilitators.

"We believe that once our children have learnt how to learn, their hidden potentials become unlocked and unleashed; and once that is done, the future of our children, the next generation becomes immeasurable," according to Pn. Zarina Mobarak, the Regional Director of Beaconhouse South East Asia, who is herself a trained teacher from Bradford University. "We pride ourselves for our unique Beaconhouse curriculum where the focus is on a student-centred interactive learning environment. Here, we develop the child's ability to examine the facts presented, think independently, express themselves and present their opinions and be creative in their work," she added.

Proven Successful Beaconhouse Curriculum

At Beaconhouse Sri Inai, this philosophy is translated onto our curriculum, which is the national KBSR and KBSM curriculum. In addition, the school has infused the internationally recognised Cambridge English syllabus into the national English curriculum. By doing so, students at Beaconhouse Sri Inai would be prepared to sit for all the various Cambridge English examinations from 'starters', (the lowest level) all the way to the 'CAE level'. (which is the pre-university level). While we motivate and guide our students to achieve academic excellence via our specially-designed Beaconhouse curriculum (seen in the sterling results achieved yearly at the UPSR,PMR and SPM results) we believe that our main task is to constantly challenge our students to attain results one notch higher than their natural ability.

"We are proud to state that an 'A' student is pushed to challenge themselves based on internationally recognised syllabus whilst our 'B' students are challenged to attained an 'A', our 'C' students, a 'B' and so forth," according to Pn Zarina. At Beaconhouse Sri Inai, remedial classes are also incorporated into the school curriculum, thereby eliminating the 'tuition' syndrome and problems afflicting teachers in which our government is seeking to eradicate.

At all Beaconhouse Schools, the focus does not lie purely in academia as students are exposed to the other facets of life, true to Beaconhouse's beliefs of exposing our children to various learning experiences and environment. Presentation skills as well as oratory skills are also an important component of the syllabuses along with exposure to music, art and drama. In line with our continual search for new standards in quality private educate, even our music syllabus has been modified to enable our students to sit for the ABRSM examinations.

We have also commenced a new tradition, which is to bring Literature to life via a public drama presentation following the English literature text from 2009 onwards. The fact that it was a 'sold out' drama presentation in July 2009 at the Civic Centre Auditorium with the audience from 21 schools and more than 2100 students is evident of the success of our Experiential Learning methodology in our Beaconhouse curriculum. We strongly believe this exposure would indirectly educate our children on perseverance, team-work, confidence, working under stressful conditions, the ability to think on your feet when one misses their lines, public speaking and of course the ability to understand the literature in question in greater depth, according to Pn Zarina.

"We believe that our leaders must be exceptional individuals excelling in academia as well as in character, public relation, oratory and more importantly, to be able to adapt and react based on any given situations. We believe that exceptional leaders are not born but led. Our trained, experienced and caring teachers dedicated to the unique Beaconhouse style of education have been guiding our proteges for more than 33 years since we opened our doors to private education worldwide. We are fuelled by passion, run by passion and awarded for excellence. In this world of competitiveness, not any education for your child will do, get the International Beaconhouse education," Pn Zarina adds.

Extensive Sporting Activities

Led by Mr.Isthiaq Mobarak, Malaysia's Olympic hurdler, our students are exposed to all the various sporting activities including the track events, long and high jump, shot putt, javelin and the hurdles. In 2009, the Beaconhouse Football Academy was set up after much interest was generated by the workshop conducted by Malaysia's very own former international footballer and International host at ESPN, Mr. Serbegeth Singh. All this is testament of our commitment, that in all we do, we do BEST.

Our enrolment of more than 165,000 students worldwide this year is itself testimony of the success of the Beaconhouse School System. The reason is obvious, as alluded by the passion of the Regional Director, Pn Zarina for education when she stated proudly that, "Our centres are operated as schools first and profit centres second as we believe that our children are our future."
